Did you know that a candle has a memory? When burning a candle for the first time, it's suggested that you burn it one hour for each inch in diameter. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside edges and will prevent your candle from forming a "canyon" in the center. Burning a candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you burn the candle it will "remember" to burn to it's edge. Our oval containers are 3” in diameter. The first time one is lighted, it should be burned for at least three hours to establish its "memory". This allows your container candle to establish a full melt pool increasing the scent throw. This will also utilize all the wax in the jar, leaving you with just an empty jar and no left over wax! When your candle has burned completely, our containers make cute storage containers.
Do: |
|
- Create the Candle Memory Burn the 1st time you light your candle.
- Keep your wick trimmed to 1/4 inch. This prevents excess heat and smoke and it also extends the life of your candle.
- Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
- Center the wick during the burn and re-center just after putting out the candle.
- A slight curve of the wick is appropriate. Should one side of the candle become too low, push the wick slightly to the opposite side, but only if the wick is warm.
- When you burn a highly scented candle, sometimes "mushrooming" will occur on the wick. Treat this as a friendly reminder that you need to trim the wick.
- Extinguish the candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn’t burning properly and the flame isn’t controlled. Before the wax hardens, make sure to re-center the wick. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before re-lighting.
- If your candle is smoking despite trimming the wick and checking for debris in the melt pool, extinguish the candle immediately. Trim the wick again a little more and allow to cool before relighting. The smoking will stop. With a quality candle, you shouldn’t have problems with smoking, but it is worth remembering that scented candles will smoke more than unscented candles.

Don't:
- Leave a candle burning unattended or near any flammable object. Unattended candles are a significant fire hazard.
- Burn a votive candle without a votive cup. These candles are not designed to burn free standing like pillars. Burning without a votive cup can be dangerous and will significantly reduce the life of your candle.
- Burn your candle in a drafty location or near a fan or an open window. This will cause uneven burning. If you experience an uneven burn, occasionally rotate your candle 180° to correct the problem.

Remember:
- To create the memory burn the 1st time you light your candle.
- Never “blow out” a candle. This will spray the wax everywhere and cause the candle to smoke. The most effective way to extinguish the flame of a candle is to use a candle snuffer. If you don’t own a snuffer, use the cover that came with the candle.
- Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from the glass holder or containers. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the container to break upon subsequent use.
- Remember that each time you re-light your candle, it will “remember” to burn out to the rim if the memory burn was done correctly the first time it was lighted.
- Remember that a lit wick that gets too close to the side of the container will crack the container, liquid wax will leak out. After the candle is put out, re-centering the wick will assure the candle burns evenly the next time its light. Once the wax hardens it’s too late!
